It's always difficult to compare these things. Melbourne is a Group of Eight university, the top eight (and most prestigious) research-led universities in Australia. In this sense, it corresponds roughly to the Russell Group in the UK.
Comparison with the US is a little more difficult; Melbourne is one of the top universities in Australia, so its counterpart should theoretically be the top universities in the US. However, the ivy league, and even the top technical schools like CalTech, MIT, etc. are a cut above Melbourne. Melbourne is a top uni in Aust., but the top unis in the UK and the US are so much better than the top unis in Aust, so it's hard to judge.
Perhaps one way of looking at it is this: Australia has about 40 universities, and Melbourne is in the top 8, so roughly speaking, it is in the top 20%. How many universities are there in the US? Perhaps someone here can supply a number.

you see, going to melb uni aint a huge thing coz in australia, prestige is based on courses.
any dud can get into melb uni farming, but its entirely another thing to get into law/medicine...

Wikipedia, the on-line encyclopedia, lists just under 1700 universities for the US. The same source lists 35 universities for Australia.
