Well I got this brochure today from NYU which pretty much just tells me all this crap about why i should apply blah blah blah... typical spam. Only difference is, this one is only for URMs. So i finish scanning the brochure and on the back flap it says "New York University is an affirmative action/equal opportunity institution."

Now my stats arent amazing or anything... i would be slightly below the average person accepted at NYU. My question is, what are some schools that heavily weigh URM status? If you must know, im 100% hispanic.

thanks,

culovv

Theoretically competitive universities like NYU will weigh your minority status but if your STATS are not competitive you won't have a chance.

To be in the game you have to have a G.P.A. in the 3.00 + range, SAT scores above 1150, have great recommendations and decent extra curriculars. If you are willing to pay most of your way it's a triple plus.

City universities like NYU have a large pool of minorities to pick from therefore your best bet is to look into colleges in the Boone Docks.

Pick up a copy of Princeton Review's 351 Best schools and scan the percentage of Hispanics that attend. If the % is low and it's a State school like SUNY, U. of Delaware, U. of Maryland or maybe Chapell Hill, you might be just what they are looking for. Remember Colleges have a need to satisfy DIVERSITY issues and you just might be the guy they need.

if your stats are just slightly below average, then you have a really good chance.

not really sadeyed.. piper has it right one.. nyu has such a large and diverse applicant pool to choose from.. they don't really need to lower their standards for urms becuase they have a large selection

Sadeyedlady's prejuidice comes out even though she will deny it.

I bet Sadeyedlady's shtick (story in Yiddish)really goes like this.

"Those minorities have it made. They don't have to place much of an effort on anything but a free ride. They are quickly recruited by those damn liberal universities taking precious seats away from honest tax paying Americans( meaning white)."

What Sadeyedlady doesn't give a hoot about is how whites can get into Ivies with C averages. George Bush got into Yale with C- average and nobody gives a damn. If Bimbo Paris Hilton had D- and applied to Princeton I bet she would get in before anyone here with a A+ average. LOL

BOTTOM LINE:

A minority WILL NOT MAKE IT into a competitive college with below average credentials. That mythology is advanced by the Republican right so that Bimbo Americans will not think too much about Legacy admissions.

It's easier and more comfortable to believe that minorities are taking over the nation's top universities thus rationalizing why many non-minorities get REJECTED from top colleges.

HOWEVER.........

Just by taking a quick glance at minority percentages in 99% of colleges around the nation, one doesn't need to be rocket scientist to figure out that affirmative action is more words than action.

Umm...I said if his stats are SLIGHTLY below average.

By definition, MANY people get accepted with below average stats...

And if he is a URM and they are only SLIGHTLY (keyword here) below average, I still think he has a really good chance.

Say NYU's average SAT is a 1400 and he has a 1350..slightly below but a very good chance.

I totally agree that minorities aren't favored that much..legacies get away with much more.

Odds are half of the people accepted at any college are below the school's average stats, don't you think? It's how tight the distribution is that'll tell the difference. :-)
