Middlebury is excellent.

WESLEYAN! The profs are amazing, and so are the students. It's more or less on the same level as Middlebury regarding admissions, but the students are more hippie than Middlebury's. Wes is hard to get into- 1390 SAT according to most recent figures. The campus is gorgeous. The town isn't great, but there are some good restaurants, and its Connecticut location is close enough to many major cities.

Just graduated in English from Dartmouth. Loved the department - small classes, down-to-earth profs, and one of the secretaries has a cool dog that hangs out with you. They have a creative writing program for a major, and great abroad programs (the English one revolves between Dublin, Glasgow, and Trinidad, but you can study anywhere because of the flexibility of the schedule - I studied Spanish in Barcelona). It's gorgeous in Hanover and while it is a small town, the students make up for it. Plus if you like outdoorsy stuff it's the best place around.
