Mills College (women's college) in Oakland is about the only true LAC in the SF area. Some of the Catholic schools like Santa Clara and St. Mary's have some aspects of an LAC. Likewise for the University of the Pacific.

Northern California does not have a true LAC. The Claremont Colleges in Southern California are excellent, but some 600 or so miles away from San Francisco. As for going to the same college as a friend, I wouldn't recomend it. It's very difficult to imagine when you're in high school how much people grow and change in different directions in college. But, also, meeting new people and forming new, intense friendships is one of the best aspects of college. Many people find that harder to do if they're putting most of their energy into maintaining an old friendship. That's not to say you should avoid going to a college because a friend is there, but that you shouldn't pick a college because of a friend. People come into college eager to form friendships. You won't be lonely if you come in with the same attitude.
