Hi. I am looking around for some colleges that not only offer a dance major(limited in my state) so presumably outside of WA. but a concentration in ballet if possible. Lots of schools have dance majors concentrating on modern (not my thing). Money is also a huge issue. My family does'nt really have money for college. Just not going and just dancing is becoming more appealing because of lack of money, but getting a degree is important to me. I have look at Boston Conservatory, NC school of the arts, Purchase SUNY. Anybody have any suggestions? thanks.

I did a search for you on collegeboard.com and it gave me a list of 58 schools across the country that offer a ballet major.

You can check it out here:

you can modify the search by chaning location, cost, etc.

hope this helps :) good luck!

For starters look at Utah, Indiana, Marymount Manhattan, and Goucher. Also, Juilliard, which is traditionally stronger in modern, has built its ballet, and they definitely have scholarship money. Dance Magazine has a college issue every year and also publishes a college guide. See their website.

Do a search on "Ballet," there are a couple of threads in the archives.

My D doesn't want to major in Dance but wants access to continued high-level ballet, so we've covered some of this terrain. Ballet is a bit like musical theatre in that you have to decide whether you want a conservatory approach or a Dance major, emphasis ballet, in a more coventional academic background.

Some of the schools that crossed my D's radar screen were UC Irvine, Skidmore, NYU (conservatory approach), Barnard (her best ballet experience while visiting colleges) and Smith.

Barnard and Smith are women's colleges but both have sufficient co-ed opportunities if you're concerned.

I guess one key question is how academically rigorous an experience do you want at the same time? From my D's perspective, Utah and Indiana had great ballet possibilities but she would have been bored stiff in non-Dance classes.

The OP is looking at conservatory programs, which is why I suggested Utah and Indiana. I would also check out Mercyhurst College in PA; I know a bright young dancer who was extremely impressed by their programs, although she ended up deferring to take a pro contract. Mercyhurst gives merit scholarships by audition. Barnard has some amazing ballet teachers, including Allegra Kent, but performing there is almost entirely modern. Also, they don't accept you as a dancer; you must apply on the basis of your academics. Take a look at Southern Methodist University's Meadow School of the Arts; excellent ballet.

thanks all! i am glad to here julliard has good scholarship money. however it is like the most selective college in the country! I am also onthe lookout for schools that don't require an in person audition. NC school of the arts will accept a video. Traveling costs and taking time off from work and school would be so hard at the end of my winter quarter. thanks for all your help.
