Hi!
I'm in Hawaii and applying for some good schools back east. I want some safety schools in Washington and Oregon. I was thinking of Univ. Eastern Wash., Western wash., and maybe Portland state. Any other western safeties, or ideas about these schools? Thanks.

Anyone going to Washington or Oregon? What's it like in the northwest?

What are your stats? Since budget cutbacks, admission is more difficult for instate students, especially Western Wa, Eastern Wa does not get as many applicants. What sort of school are you looking for?
Since many students end up at their safeties, it doesn't do just to pick them out of a hat. Only apply to schools where you won't be freaked if you end up attending.
We are in Seattle and my daughter applied to CWU, WWU, Evergreen, UO and Reed. She was admitted to all and is attending Reed. Evergreen was her second choice and WWU probably distant third, if that helps.
( What part Hawaii? My youngest is going to Lahaina, in a few weeks to camp and to do some field study with her school- Ive never been so don't know what weather to expect.)

Take a look at Linfield College and Pacific University both in Oregon. Both schools are good safeties and attract large numbers of students from Hawaii. Linfield seems to have a low threshold for merit aid and pays for travel for study abroad. Both are relatively low cost for private schools.

Pacific U has a lot of Hawaiian students. Linfield less. Both offer scholorships for merit as well as finaide and aren't to difficult to get in. The Northwest has lots of rain. More drizzle then downpour most of the time. Very Green. Many Hawaiian students have gone to school here for a very long time and many have stayed. There is even a river named for Hawaii in Eastern Oregon in the 19th century.
Portland state has no real campus life, Western looked very good to Mike in the early search and has the best rep of the schools you have mentioned. E Wash is in a much dryer colder area then the others. Except for Oregon and Oregon State I can't really recommend any Oregon publics.

Thanks, everyone!
since you asked, stats are 1380 SAT, 3.6 gpa, classrank 4/13 o.k. e.c.s. I'm looking for colleges/univ. that I'm virtually guaranteed admission, my list is pretty top heavy.

You'd be virtually guaranteed admission and merit money at either Linfield or Pacific University. You might also take a look at Willamette University - it would probably be a safety/match for you. Another possiblity would be Lewis & Clark. In Washington, Seattle University would be a safety for you as well. Good luck.

Any good safeties that aren't religiously affiliated? no offense...

Willamette is probably a safety with you stats. Also long history of Island student. I have worked with many Island grads from there. It is Very loosly religiously affiliated. You can go and never notice. PLU has a chapel service daily but it is not required. UPS also has similar stats as Willamette and is un affiliated.
What are you academic interests? Makes a difference in the school. I said I wouldn't recommend other Oregon schools but S. Oregon has a very good theatre program and W. Oregon has a good rep in education. U of Oregon would be a safety for you as would be OSU. OSU are good in Marine Biology, Forestry and agreculture. U of O has strong Biology, Journalism, History, English and Education and is more diverse both geographically and culturaly then many NW schools.

Western is a beautiful school! Your gpa is more of a match than a safety, however you gpa is above their average.
