Hi,
I was wondering if someone could recommend some good Aerospace colleges. I'm currently only a Sophomore, however, I think it's important to start thinking about this now. My unweighted average is a 93 (I don't know what that transfers too on a normal GPA scale, my school, for some reason dosen't use it; 3.3?), weighted I beleive it is around a 95. I have not yet taken the SATs. This week I took the PSATs though, and nailed the math section, the verbal, and writing I don't think I did too well on though. I have thought about MIT (I doubt I can get in, but I plan on applying anyway), BU, Notre Dame, and Syracuse. Any other schools, that you think I have a reasonable, or semi-resonable chance of getting into I would like to know about. I would also like to know what you think of the Aerospace programs of the schools above. I would like to stay in the North, or should I say anywhere where there are Ski Mountians; country, or state dosen't matter. Thank you for your time.

-Josh-

P.S; I have serched collegeboard.com, however, it dosen't tell you how good the specific programs are, and it dosen't give colleges in other countries (i.e, Canada, possibly an allied Euro country).

Embry-Riddle's supposed to have a good Aerospace Engineering Program. Ditto for the Air Force Academy.

A 93 average is above a 3.3 GPA, but I don't know exactly what it is. I *think* you divide your average by 25, which would make your GPA a 3.72.

The University of Illinois has the 3rd ranked engineering school in the nation, and the aerospace engineering program there is first rate as well. Definetly worth looking into. You'll want your ACT to be around 32 or higher for the engineering college and your should keep your GPA up as close to 4.0 as possible.

Georgia Tech has superb aerospace and internships/co-op opportunities with Lockheed.

Clickspring,
Called the U of IL last Friday. Was told they do NOT have aerospace as an undergrad. Was confused & needed clarification, as the website looks like it does. Admissions said "no".

Embry-Riddle is as far from mountains as you can get, unless you count the mesas of AZ. Certainly not the beaches of Daytona! Josh needs to forget about these if set on mountains. Air Force Academy is in CO. Seems like his match, unless of course you don't want them to own your hide for a few years. :)

For proximity to skiing areas, I'd look into Cornell or AF. At Cornell, you can even ski to satisfy your PE requirements.

Thanks again everyone. Kissy I looked heavily into the Cornell program, and I like the school, however I would like to study more one the Astro side then the Aero side, and Cornell dosen't really offer that until grad school. I'm also not to enthused over the idea of the Air Force because I really don't want to be owned for X number of years. Any other ideas for the Astro side anyone? Is waiting for the Astro side until grad. school a bad thing?

The AFA is a beast to get into, but it's free. Where as, ERAU is 25K per year, and pretty easy to get into. Middle Tennessee has a great aviation program, and they do offer Aerospace Engineering I believe, may want to give them a look as well..

I'd take another look at Cornell program. I just looked at their aerospace site and seems to me that it actually is a good fit for your interests.

Josh81- You're to be commended on starting your college search as a sophomore, especially as thoroughly as you have so far. You're obviously a focused and talented student.

What are your long-term career goals? They would definitely influence your choice of colleges and majors. Seeking out a mentor, contacting faculty members and/or students at some of the universities, and researching professional organizations could perhaps help you clarify your goals and course of action. Sounds like you are already on the right track.

U of Michigan is excellent. I got into U of M Engineering. I applied in late September. Instate. 1380 SAT I. 4.0 UW. Female. Tons of Ecs and a good rec.

I gave Cornell another look, and I saw things I missed before and it does look like a match. I also looked at U Mich @ Ann Arbor and that also looked nice. I have a good friend at Cornell so I'm gona talk to her, and see if she'll give the e-mail of someone majoring in Aerospace down there. Thanks again all, you've been a great help.

I'm looking for some good AE schools that are easier to get into. What do you think of RIT, RPI, and UVA?

By Kbrk (Kbrk) on Saturday, November 08, 2003 - 07:13 pm: Edit

Check out University of Colorado at Boulder
It is exactly what you are looking for.
Aside from major ivy league schools and service academies they have sent many grads into space.

Why would I be a jewish orphan? Anyways I have looked at Boulder, and plan on applying when the time comes, but I think I"m gona do ED to Cornell. There's just something I like about it. Thanks again everyone

Have you taken a look at the colleges recommended by American Institute of Aerospace and Aeronautics?
