I had never thought about a liberal arts school before my teacher said that it might be the best place for me (since I am so confused). Here's my predicament: I don't know what I want to major in, nor do I know what I want to be. My strengths (or so people tell me) are in writing. I don't really know what the REAL differences are between LAs and other, Doctoral universities, except that most LA school students major in, hello, liberal arts. The problem with me is that if I do try for an LA, I only want to go to the top schools (such as Amherst or Swarthmore), because I am stupid and consider it a step down from other schools such as, for example, Columbia or Northwestern. Advice?

Well lib arts schools basicly have everything a regular college has without the graduate school, large classes, graduate research, and pre-professional stuff (like buisness and nursing). If you are looking for top lib arts schools you should know that the following are as hard to get into as ivies. In the northeast: swathmore, skidmore, middleberry, amherst, brandeis, williams. In the south I know of davidson. In the west, Pomona is one of the elite schools (actually second on my list after stanford). It is very hard to get into though. Im forgetting many others, and there are others that are less "hard to get into".
