I've heard wonderful things about Macalester as a gay-friendly school, and they are in the Princeton Review's rankings in that category, however I also read that they have problems with homophobia on campus (hate crimes that are not recognized as hate crimes nor treated as such) and that the gay-studies department is incredibly small - to the point of non-existent (whereas some very conservative colleges have large, flourishing gay studies departments). I'm looking for more input, thanks!

My understanding is that MacCalaster is very liberal and gay-friendly. Find some gay people that go there and ask them.

Despite some conservative schools having good gay studies departments, the feel on campus (and position of students) may be otherwise. Do you really want to subject yourself to that?

Try finding a school that is gay friendly, liberal, and has a large gay-studies dept.

Are you gay or just want a school that is open and accepting?
