Happy holidays to all my friends at College Confidential (in particular, Roger, Dadster, Dave, and burningman). [Waiting for the college applicant to wake up so that we can open presents.]

So far, three admissions - one state u, one national private u, and one slac. Waiting for reply from three more - another national private u and two more slacs. We could have just as easily applied to twenty more colleges, it was difficult (for me anyway) to turn most of these down - perhaps, this is the hardest thing in applying to colleges; what if there was a hidden gem in one of theses. I will mention some in this category (that we turned down) - Case Western, WUSTL, Pomona, Swarthmore, Princeton, Yale, Lawrence, Colorado College, and Claremont McKenna.

Online applications worked out great - the box for short essays is like a peephole of small size (about a third of the size of the box I am typing this on). By mistake, we included a previous version along with a final version. If this affects the final outcome, so be it - this tells us something about the college.

We had screwups. A favorite teacher forgot to send recommendation - we gave the stuff to her way too early. Another recommendation got lost because that teacher sent it before we sent the application form. One interviewer had the personality of block of coal - this cast a pall over the whole process.

Will we do anything different? I don't know. Is the process way to complex? Yes.

I agree, sometimes narrowing the list is the hardest part. There are lots of great schools out there, often with unique individual strong points.
