Any opinions on either of these schools, of degree of difficulty to get in, and which one has a better reputation?

Which Union College? New York or Nebraska?

I assume that you're asking about Union in NY, since I don't think the one in Nebraska would be on the same radar screen as Hamilton. Hamilton is slightly harder to get into, as it stands a bit higher in the US News top tier rankings. Union's selectivity greater, though, than reflected in the most recent US News data though--I think their acceptance rate was 42% or slightly lower for last year. As far as academic environments go, though, I think the two schools are more similar than not. Union and Hamilton offer many of the same kinds of things and have very solid academics (Union also has a good eng. program)--as well as opportunities for undergrad research, etc. Union is in a considerably less remote location. Schenectady itself is not a garden spot (tho' the campus is beautiful), but the Albany area has a fair amount to offer and there is a lot to do within 15-20 minutes of the campus (not to mention trains/planes to NYC and Boston, etc.). I know two boys, each from the top 10% of the same h.s. class, one at Hamilton and one at Union, and both are happy campers and are working hard (the one at Union is in the engineering program though, the student at Hamilton is majoring in sciences).

Have you looked at AWS? Amherst, Williams, or Swarthmore? They're better, IMO.

I'd like an opinion on a ranking 20%,750Math 600Verbal,A-GPA student,getting into Hamilton,Union,or Bucknell?

Jeff, I'd guess your chances are reasonable at all of them. It's hard to say, really, without knowing more about what you'll look like in terms of your ECs, quality of your recommendations and essays, etc. But statistically you are in the ballpark.

Hamilton's acceptance rate is inflated, through some devious and unethical tactics with their application procedures. In a 1995 New York Times article, they admitted they cheated to regain their Top Tier ranking in US News. I'd steer clear of the stats and shop their programs. That's what's important. Also: rural ain't the word -- they are downright out-of-the-way and lonely up there!
