Ok, well, my combined SAT score is 1420 (700v/720m) which I'm going to retake again, and my unweighted GPA is a 3.4. I know for a fact that I'd really like to go into journalism, and I'm looking for good schools in the New England/mid-atlantic area. (Boston University's already on my list. =D)

What decent colleges offer journalism programs, or even communications programs? At least if I undergrad major in comm, I could go into a journalism grad program....

There's a big difference between communications (the study of mass media, often a prelude to a career in public relations) and journalism. If you don't go to a college that offers an undergraduate journalism major, you'd be better off majoring in something related to what you might like to report on. Economics, political science, international relations, a foreign language, etc, and also writing for the campus newspaper and/or community papers. That is what will help getting into a journalism grad program.

some good schools include:

emerson: strickly a jurnalism, comunications school but would haveany major in that field that your heart desiered

U of Missouri columbia: not an amazing school but the jurnalism department has every resourse known to man and is widely known and respected for this department

Columbia U: i think it's the best in junalism of the ivys but i may be mistaken, if nothing else its in NYC

NYU and USC: great comunications but focused more twards movies and film

UC berkly: great programs in everything

U wisc Madison: cool school in a cool town with a lot of resources and a great student newspaper

Brown: also has a strong comunications department

Georgetown: probably the best "comunications" school in the country but strongly focused twards national and international political relations

Rice U: strong in everything but very strong in PR and Jurnalism

if you have any questions on these schools just ask me. i got this info through my sister who is now a junior jurnalism major. these are the schools that she looked at. by the way she chose UW Madison

Syracuse University's Newhouse School is highly ranked for journalism and the alma mater of many successful print and broadcast journalists. Northwestern is also very good.

Do not leave out UNC-CH! It has one of the best journalism schools for undergrads.

Columbia's journalism program is strictly graduate.

I second Bob, Medill=#1 school of Journalism, for the uninitiated Medill is at Northwestern in Chicago...

Make that Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois. NU does have a downtown Chicago campus for law and medicine, but most undergrads will never venture there.
I'm a 1990 Medill grad. Syracuse has a good reputation particularly when it comes to broadcast journalism. I considered going there. I considered BU too, but didn't apply.
I would NOT recommend a communications degree if you are serious about journalism. Just get your bachelor's degree, get as many clips and/or internships as you can and look forward to an early life of poverty.
