Hi.. I have wanted to go to school in NYC for a really long time.. and one of my choices was Fordham.. but my mom and dad said that it is in a really bad neighborhood (Rose Hill campus), and they don't want me to go there.. so I was just wondering if anybody knew if that is true??Thanx~!

The actual Rose Hill campus is beautiful. I wanted to go there, but have chosen another university in Manhattan (Rose Hill is in the Bronx). Once you leave the university and cross the gates you are in the ghetto. You are very close to Manhattan though, so you catch a bus or ride the subway and have everything at your fingertips.
I highly suggest Fordham...But it's your choice.

alrite-- thanx-- but is it just sort of dirty or is it like really bad with crime and everything?

By Mike212 (Mike212) on Thursday, July 10, 2003 - 02:51 am: Edit

Well it depends what you consider 'dirty'. If you have lived in the mid-west your whole life, you might think all of NYC is dirty, but if you are used to the city, pretty much all of NYC is a little dingy and you adapt.

As for crime, I can give you specifics on that.. I have been doing a little research and found what you may have been looking for...

http://criminaljustice.state.ny.us

Click on the crime stats.

That long URL will take you to a site that has information on rapes, murders, robberies, etc.

NYC.gov might have some additional information for you, but I must warn you - if you are planning to go to school in NYC - DO YOUR RESEARCH!

I feel as though the city is definitely great for some, but not everybody. First do your research on the city, and then do research on the school, because if location is important to you, you need to learn about the city where you will be living....
Just curious, have you visited NYC?? Also where do you live? Stats about you will help... I hope my info did as well.

oh yeah, you can access the Bronx county stats by clicking the crime stats and then Region... as for the specific neighborhood where the campus is located, there is not much to it in terms of hot spots...I don't think I'd walk around at night (well not alone)

You might also go to the Fordham web site and do a search for "campus security statistics" or "campus crime statistics" Each school is required to make this information available.

Another school you might also look at in the NYC area is Manhattan College - it's in a much nicer area of the Bronx and is also a Catholic school.

ok-- well that is the site of the exact Fordham statistics.. and I read through them and they don't seem bad to me.. but I don't have much to compare them to..so I was just wondering if anybody else has an opinion, and whether or not it would be a smart thing to print these out and show my parents.. or would it confirm what they were thinking?

Kara,
Try this site: ope.ed.gov/search.asp It is a database run by the US Office of Education that lists the crime statistics for every school in the country. It also provides details about the immediate area surrounding each school. Why not print out Fordham's and several other schools in the NYC area (Try these: NYU, Columbia and Manhattan College (which is in a different part of the Bronx from Fordham) and maybe a few upstate (like SUNY Binghampton)and compare the statistics. This will at least give you a way to compare and see how Fordham really is. Then you can decide whether to show them the information.

By the way, I'd also suggest that you get a copy of Kaplan's The Unofficial Insiders Guide to the 320 Most Interesting Colleges - it has a profile of Fordham that should be reassuring to your parents. Here is a quote from it:

"For parents who are reluctat to turn their kids loose in the wilds of NYC, Fordham may be the perfect compromise. Students benefit from the exposure to New York's culture and excitement, but they are stil lsheltered by Fordham's pervasive Jesuit presence and safe campuses."

This book should be available in most bookstores. Good luck!

Thanx-- I tried to go to that website but it said I wasn't authorized??

By Carolyn (Carolyn) on Thursday, July 10, 2003 - 10:00 pm: Edit

Try these links:
ope.ed.gov/security/Search.asp
OR
ope.ed.gov/security/index.asp

I may have entered the link wrong the first time.

If your heart is set on going to school in NYC, and you are lucky enough to get accepted to a great school, your parents should support you 100%... Maybe you should print out the Fordham statistics, and tell your parents the reasons you want to go to school in NYC. Also - you seem mature enough to make your own decisions on where you want to go to school. I think your parents are worried about your safety, but tell them that you will meet lots of people, and that they have nothing to worry about because NYC is the safest it has been in ten years.
They are probably really sad that you are going away to school.

It's not like they are telling you that they will not support you if you decide to go to school in NYC ~ or is it?

By Karabeara (Karabeara) on Friday, July 11, 2003 - 09:04 am: Edit

No-- they aren't saying that they won't support me, they just say that they will be worried, and aren't sure if I'm "cut out for it"

Just to set the record straight, a lot of people have been dumping on Fordham's Lincoln Center campus passing it off as a theatre school. Although it does lean toward the performing arts, its not exclusively dedicated to this type of education. Here is a small list of majors offered at Fordham-LC.

African Studies
Anthropology
Art History
Classical Civilization
Communication & Media Studies
Computer Science
Dance
Economics
English
History
Information Science
Italian Studies
Mathematics
Middle East Studies
Natural Science (only at LC)
Philosophy
Political Science
Psychology
Social Science
Theatre
Theology
Urban Studies

Fordham-Lincoln Center-NOT a theatre school. I would encourage anyone interested in attending school in Manhattan to look into FLC, regardless of their intended major.

Regarding Fordham University and the neighborhood, I'm from that area in the Bronx and would be more than happy to give any of you a "tour" of it if you'd like. E-mail if you'd like me to tell you anything about the neighborhood or have questions.
