By Winterfresh (Winterfresh) on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 01:00 pm: Edit

Here are my pathetic stats:

GPA- 2.7 (weighted- 3.0)
SAT- 610V, 530M
Class Rank- Montgomery County, MD doesn't rank students.
4 Honors, 1 AP.
First Generation African-American Female

EC's (grades next to description):
Volunteered at facility which helps toddlers exposed to drugs: 12
Volunteered at local library: 9-10
Worked for pay at local library: 10
Worked full/part-time job (after library): 10-12
Contact for my HS for MCSPJ (Montgomery County Students for Peace and Justice): 11-12

These are the schools I am planning to apply to:
University of Tampa
Temple University
East Carolina University
Frostburg State University
And a community college but I don't need to put it down =)

Do you guys think I have a good chance getting accepted to these schools?

Those seem to be a prety good match, but look on their websites for the range of acceptances by SAT scores. How did you come to chose those schools? They're a pretty diverse group geographically. What about UMCP? What specifically are you looking for in an education that led you to those schools?

At first I wanted to go to CP but I don't have the grades and I really want to get out of Maryland and go to college elsewhere. Actually what led me to these schools was that I used the 'Counselor-O-Matic' thingamijig at princetownreview.com and these schools popped up as Safeties. They grew on me after awhile.

Basically, it's best to go to ECU if you're looking to do one (or more) of two things:
1) Major in music
2) Party

Your GPA looks a *touch* weak, but you're definitely a safety for East Carolina. I'm not too familiar with the other colleges.

I heard it was a party school. I wont be majoring in music however, I'm gonna major in Sociology. What else do you know about ECU? You're like the first one whose heard of it lol

Winterfresh,

I am surprised at your choice of schools. I would consel against ECU because it does not have a good reputation as a serious school, IMHO. Why not choose at least one reach school that is good? You don't have terrible stats, and you have some things in your favor---the minority angle for many college admissions people. So, I would suggest you at least apply to one reach school, if you are interested in academics rather than partying.

Good luck!

I think you could maybe aim even a little bit higher. Most of the schools on your list, I think, are 3rd and 4th tier. I think being first generation African-American can get you into some second tier state schools.

I guess Im a little paranoid. I keep thinking im not gonna get accepted anywhere.

but now i am so lost. suddenly i have lost interest in all these schools. i dont know what to look for anymore!
