Well, let me take a stab at this.
I think # 1 would come first, followed closely by #2. #3 narrowly edges out #4, and #5 is a distant fifth. In a surprise turn of evetns, #6, #7, and #8 finish in that order. Of course, results are not yet offical and there is margin of error in this survey of 13 places. Please consult your doctor before reading the preceeding ranking.

Well, it depends on what you are looking for.
Undergrads:
Prestige:
1. Harvard
2. Yale, Princeton
4. Columbia
5. Cornell
6. Brown, Penn
8. Dartmouth
Science:
1. Cornell
2. Princeton
3. Harvard
4. Penn
5. Columbia
6. Yale
7. Brown
8. Dartmouth
Arts
1. Yale
2. Harvard
3. Brown, Dartmouth
5. Columbia
6. Princeton
7. Penn
8. Cornell
All a matter of preference. Its rather unfair to rank the ivies just because of rankings. Some excel in areas other don't. All of them are great schools and if anyone tells you otherwise, they are really ignorant. Either they can't get into an ivy or they chose the wrong one.
By Yaleeee (Yaleeee) on Saturday, June 28, 2003 - 04:13 am: Edit
this thread is pointless and dumb, but what the hell, since it looks fun i'll rank them
my opinion:
undergraduate
1 PRINCETON -they take care of their undergrads a lot cuz the gradschool is super small.
1 YALE -arts at yale rocks! plus, i'm going there.
3 HARVARD -not so good as an undergradschool, but undoubtedly, they have the most talented students.
4 COLUMBIA -lots of opportunities in the city. top notch academics.
4 CORNELL -the best for engineering and sciences.
6 UPENN -best business program
7 DARTMOUTH
8 BROWN
but don't get me wrong, THEY ARE ALL EXCELLENT SCHOOLS AND THEY ARE ALL ABOUT THE SAME!

The US News rankings are not official. They're one magazine's rankings based on dubious and arbitrary criteria and whose purpose is to sell magazines.
I realize that media like USA Today have made an art of dumbing things down to cute little charts and bite-sized tables but it's more complex than that. Really.

7. Brown
8. Dartmouth

It doesn't matter. All of these schools are great. I hate to burst your bubble but unfortunatley none of you people on this board will be going to an ivy league school so stop dreaming. Actually I take that back maybe one or two at the most will be going to an ivy league school from this board.
By Thedad (Thedad) on Sunday, June 29, 2003 - 04:05 pm: Edit
Nah. This board self-selects from driven and obsessed high-achievers and over-achievers...I think more that 1-2 will go to Ivy but not nearly as many as those who think they will.
By Xiggi (Xiggi) on Sunday, June 29, 2003 - 07:10 pm: Edit
I second Thedad with a slight difference. I think that there will be a bit more than 1-2. After all we are speaking about 8 schools.
By Thedad (Thedad) on Sunday, June 29, 2003 - 08:48 pm: Edit
Sorry...I meant to type more "than" 1-2, not more "that" 1-2. Xiggi and I are in agreement; Spartan had suggested 1-2. I wouldn't be surprised if it were as many as a dozen or two. But that's far fewer than the number who think they're going there.
By Spiritofhadad (Spiritofhadad) on Sunday, June 29, 2003 - 09:46 pm: Edit
I agree this is kind of pointless and stupid, but we have all done something questionable or profoundly moronic in our lives, so what the hell!
This ranking is more reputation-based than anything else.
1) Harvard
2) Yale
3) Princeton
4) Dartmouth
5) Cornell
6) Brown
7) Columbia
8) Duke (Hmm, not too sure about this one)

Yale has the best undergrad experience along with Princeton. Havard has the best reputation, but that doesn't mean they offer the best education. Rest of the Ivy's are also great.

Yale = best undergrad [of the Ivies] maps to my info & prejudices but that's as far as I'd take it.
There's still the question of "fit" regarding specific major(s)/departments, environment, and whether or not you'll throw one if you don't get in.

Would anyone -- Thedad or others -- like to go into more detail re Yale's undergrad experience? It has always been my impression that Yale and Princeton had more to offer the undergrad than does Harvard. However, young friends who attend Harvard are very happy there and say the house system offers all the benefits of the residential college system plus the advantage of letting students mix freely with their whole class freshman year. Plus...there is Cambridge. And Boston. (And better dance for dd.) People do seem to agree that unless you go to the Finals clubs there are not big partying opportunities, but dd prefers cultural activities and interesting shopping to partying. Harvard folks are smart enough lol to rebut everything Yale says in their own tour -- they say their classes are small, there's prof contact for anyone who seeks it, their students are very happy people who make lifelong friendships, etc. etc. Would much appreciate any concrete info to the contrary, since I still have my doubts.
By Thedad (Thedad) on Monday, June 30, 2003 - 11:37 am: Edit
It's all pretty much anecdotal but virtually everyone I've talked to has said that Harvard is much better for graduate than undergraduate education.
As an *environment*, I like Cambridge.
And I was mightily impressed by the range of EC stuff at Harvard, such as our guide's production of Richard III.
The House vs. Residential College thing is pretty much a push, imo.
If you're really undecided, visit both places and let the chemistry decide for you.
By Spiritofhadad (Spiritofhadad) on Monday, June 30, 2003 - 11:47 am: Edit
Have any of you heard of Queens University in Ontario, Canada?
By Aparent (Aparent) on Monday, June 30, 2003 - 01:43 pm: Edit
Thanks, Thedad. We did visit both places. Dd had fallen in love with Yale, as I've mentioned, but was not at all happy with the dance opportunities there. Visiting Harvard seemed like visiting Yale plus dance plus Cambridge environment plus Boston. I have for so many years heard the same thing you have re Harvard -- and even saw a report issued by the university, saying that many undergrads reach senior year without having a senior professor know their name -- that I am dubious. And Columbia continues to be in the running. And then there's the pretty big question of getting in ;-). Making the ED/EA decision at this point is certainly nerve-wracking!

AP, if the dance opp being sought is ballet at Yale, I think you have to look at New Haven Ballet, virtually right across the street. Have we talked about this? It looked and sounded good but we didn't have time for D to stay and take a class. It's looks to be a high-end school with a pre-professional company and about 8-10 pro dancers.
The Harvard ballet seems to be strictly EC but with teachers/directors from Boston Ballet...we actually didn't see anything about it when we were there, only a little bit gleaned from the website.
TheMom was talking just last night that she has reservations about D applying EA at Yale over Harvard because Yale seems to stress leadership and community service a lot more, which are not D's strongpoints in her profile...your thoughts?
By Aparent (Aparent) on Monday, June 30, 2003 - 04:35 pm: Edit
We did talk re New Haven Ballet. I was quite ominous about it lol. Do a search. We watched a class and dd was very disappointed, felt as though it would be "being back in hs." Harvard Ballet Company we did see perform. Although they have a couple of students with impressive ballet resumes, overall the standard is at or below dd's hs company, nothing like Columbia's very professional productions, which are reviewed in the NY Times. There are a couple of teachers from BB at Harvard but also others...
If Harvard stresses nothing else, it's leadership. They are really looking for the movers and the shakers of the future. This is why one can't credit the school with producing them; they seek them out. I think a "special talent" may be more challenging to demonstrate at Harvard, where they have former NYCB dancers, Natalie Portman types, etc.
Yale seems to emphasize community. Re community service, I do know that Yale is big on this. Not sure re Harvard. Harvard appears to be quite a bit harder to get into than Yale...Yale is really seeking the kid who is in love with it and will attend.
These comments are obviously not Gospel truth but the fruit of five Yale info sessions I have attended over the years as well as conversations with students at both schools.
By Sunshine916 (Sunshine916) on Monday, June 30, 2003 - 04:38 pm: Edit
does Yale really stress leadership and community service? uh oh...so then what does Harvard stress?
i want to apply EA somewhere just to give my application a fighting chance in the amazing pool. i am really leaning toward Yale right now because i have always thought i would fit in better at Yale than at somewhere like Harvard. However, if they stress that sort of stuff, maybe i shouldnt even bother and do everything RD?
bottom line is that Cornell is my top choice but my parents wont let me do ED because they are afraid i wont get enough fin. aid and that they want me to see where i can get in first before i make a final decision. thats why i want to do EA...

4. Cornell/Columbia
6. Dartmouth
7. UPenn
8. Brown
Ranking the ivies is like ranking schools from 1-10, but they are all just subdivisions of 9-10. If you know what I mean. They are all extraordinary schools.

First off before i rank; just a few of my worlthless/interesting comments.
1. UPENN sucks....no matter what you say
2. HYP are great....even though there is absolutely no chance in hell that I'll get into any of them
3. Columbia is an amazing school....you just can't beat NYC
4. Dartmouth is an excuse for an ivy.......pathetic profesors and heavy heavy drinking don't constitute an ivy leauge school
5. Harvard *is* great......but you have to admit it's just the slightest bit over rated for its prestige
Now, my rating, again pretty worthless bc afterall its just my opinion:
1. Yale
2. Harvard
3. Princeton
4. Columbia
5. Brown
6. Cornell
7. Dartmouth
8. UPENN

How can people knock Dartmouth and UPENN??? Those have to be the two best schools in the Ivy League. My rankings....
1. Harvard
2. Princeton
3. Yale
4. Pennsylvania
5. Dartmouth
6. Brown
7. Columbia
8. Cornell
Honestly, why is Cornell so popular on this website. My school sends about 15 kids to the Ivy league and they rarely go to Cornell! No one seems to like the school.
My favorite schools in the Ivy League are Penn and Dartmouth. Why? Because they are the only two NORMAL schools. Penn and Dartmouth both have big frat scenes, and are big drinking schools. Combine that with a stellar education and you have a perfect college.

"Cornell is popular cuz it's the easiest ivy to get into."
i can't agree with that. i'm an international student, and a lot of people from my school apply to the "lower-acceptance schools", because they feel that those schools are "better". yes, it's dumb, but tahts the reallity. the harder to get into the school, the more people get attracted to the school.
another thing: i bet one of the reasons some people are putting cornell in the bottom of the list is because their acceptance rate is the highest. these people judge colleges only by there acceptance rate. admission is all they can think about.
the only ivys that beat cornell's academic reputation in the usnews ranking every year are HYP. the rest of the ivys are usually below cornell.
i am not that much of a cornell fan, but i really do think that it is better than some of the other ivys.
By Wait (Wait) on Friday, July 04, 2003 - 09:17 am: Edit

By Wait (Wait) on Saturday, July 05, 2003 - 07:57 am: Edit
US News bases its rankings on 7 criteria: assessment by administrators at peer institutions, retention of students, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving, and (for national universities-doctoral and liberal arts colleges-bachelor's) "graduation rate performance," the difference between the proportion of students expected to graduate and the proportion who actually do.
PEER ASSESSMENT gets the greatest weight (25%). People at peer institutions are asked to rate peer schools' academic programs on a scale from 1 (marginal) to 5 (distinguished).
RETENTION is a measure of 6-year graduation rate (80 percent of the retention score) and freshman retention rate (20 percent of the score).
FACULTY RESOURCES is a measure of class size, faculty salary, and the proportion of professors with the highest degree in their fields.
STUDENT SELECTIVITY is based on SATS and acceptance rate.
FINANCIAL RESOURCES is a measure of the average spending per student on instruction, research, student services, and related educational expenditures.
GRADUATION RATE PERFORMANCE is the difference between a school's six-year graduation rate for the class and the predicted rate for the class.
