I am fron Nigeria ,and all my friends want to go to an ivy[i too do].but we all can't afford to pay more than 10,000 dollars.
the thing: I have really been un-realiastic about fin- aid opp available to me .
Schools iwant to apply to
Harvard
Princeton
Howard [heard it's a black school]
temple u
Williams
colgate
Lafayette
Rider u
I still don't know how i will figure out which school to apply to ,which to go to ,how much i can pay and all of that.
I even guess i will drink a whole lot while filling out my applications.
All international students should really reply this post
It's so good

Hey, hope this thread gets rolling. When I was applying there didn´t seem to be much info on this stuff out here. Anyway, collegehell, my financial situation was more or less like urs. Paying over 5k could be too much of a strain. So after a lot of researc, I came up with, arvard, Yale, middlebury, vassar, swarthmore, mt olyoke, bates, williams, connecticut, colgate, hamilton, u of chicago and wesleyan uni. Got rejected by a lot, waitlisted by a few and accepted at one!(colgate)with a financial aid package which I´m pretty satisfied with. All that pain and hard work was worth it in the end! My stats were 1410 SAT1 (710M 690V) and SAT II..oh great I can´t remember, I think it was 650/700/690, something like that. Not too great but enough I guess! I think Oberlin gives a lot of aid as well. ope tis helps!:-)
By Kaysouljah (Kaysouljah) on Monday, June 23, 2003 - 10:04 am: Edit
cara811888 You are so lucky , i am so happy for you.I just can't express how happy i am for you .Any international student who gets into a good american college with a good scholarship deserves a mighty hug.
I think i will apply early to colgate ,maybe will get good scholarship .
And for those extremly smart international students with good stats apply to wash univ in st lious .They have some pretty good merit scholarships .
And pls all internationals should keep this post rolling
By Chermiel (Chermiel) on Monday, June 23, 2003 - 06:19 pm: Edit
Being international and asking for aid is tough..i mean relaly tough. I took sat once, got 1470 (730v 740m) and Sat 2 8002c, 800chem and 780 writing. Got rejected by Pton, cornell ( i thought i may get in here), UC-berkeley and Uc-san diego even tho the last two i dint ask for aid. Rough..very rough. For some ppl luck holds and works out better than others. My most sincere advice is plz go ahead and apply ed, it helps, and u can decline it saying there isnt enough fin-aid. Bestof luck
By Exeguest2001 (Exeguest2001) on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 03:12 am: Edit
U got rejected by "UC San Diego" with a 1470 that's very hard to believe. TOUGH LUCK.
By Andymcgav (Andymcgav) on Tuesday, June 24, 2003 - 10:44 am: Edit
I thought that international students can't apply ED or EA.
By Ryuji (Ryuji) on Wednesday, June 25, 2003 - 11:33 am: Edit
I would definitely agree with Chermiel.
I'm international student and was pretty much in the same situation as Chermiel..I got 1530 SAT I, SAT II( 800, 750, 730)with really good high school results(top 5%) and few, but focused ECs..rejected at MIT, Stanford, Caltech, Cornell(shocking), UC Berkeley, UC San Diego(extremely shocked!!!)...got in at UCLA, UIUC, UW-Madison.
But, I got into the James Scholar Honors Program at UIUC, which is where I'm goin this fall!
I believe essays, awards and special talents hold great importance and value in the eyes of adcoms, especially at top schools, where they have way too many high-achievers..For all internationals applying to US universities out there, good luck with the application! I would advise spending a great amt of time writing really interesting essays and join some notable competitions.
Go UIUC!

Hello
I went to a community college for 2 years, and I applied to the following schools for transfer. (major:business)GPA: 4.0 and very poor ECs.
USC (still no decision)
UC Berkeley (rejected)
UC Riverside (got in)
Purdue University (my application was kinda late, but no decision yet)
UCLA (I got in the Business econ major, and I'll probably go there next fall. Go Bruins!) But I did not get any aid, and I will probably need it for my senior year.

Thank god this got rolling
Cara811888 : Does colgate require SAT 2's if you take the ACT ?
and generally what would be a good score for the ivy league

This is the first time i am posting on this site. I find that the advice given on this site is especially useful to confused international students such as myself. Hopefully you folk can give me some advice regarding my problem. Thanx in advance.
I am from singapore. Went to a local poly after my GCSE "o" Levels. Graduated with a poly Diploma in Electronics, Computer and Telecommunications. Found that i was no longer interested in working in this field so decided to get a degree in "Banking and Finance or International Finance". Did my SATs.
SAT 1 : 750(Maths)/ 750(Verbal)
Decided to do an out of campus Associate Degree in my own country before transferring to the US to finish my Bachelor's Degree. Currently in my second year of the Associate Degree program offered by the Indiana Uni. Expected to get above average GPA. I would probably need financial aid as the most i can afford is 10,000 US dollars. The list of colleges i would like to enter are :
University of Pennsylvania (Wharton)
New York University (Stern)
University of California-Berkeley (Haas)
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
Massachusetts Inst. of Technology (Sloan)
University of Texas-Austin (McCombs)
U. of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (Kenan-Flagler)
Indiana University-Bloomington (Kelley)
University of Virginia (McIntire)
Carnegie Mellon University (PA) and
Boston College (Carroll)
do i need to do the SAT IIs ?? and any advice given is greatly appreciated.

What about international students that were educated in the U.S.A for high school?
Do they have higher chances of acceptance than other int. students that were educated elsewhere?
I'm Canadian, I moved to the U.S. for high school.
I'm not a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident yet, so I am classified as international.
Universities can trust that I was well educated in the U.S. so am I at an advantage?
Any opinions or ideas would be appreciated.

Dantes: You're almost my carbon copy (is that a good thing or not?)
University of Pennsylvania (Wharton)
New York University (Stern)
University of California-Berkeley (Haas)
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
Massachusetts Inst. of Technology (Sloan)
- on my list also
$$$$ I can afford = yours
I'm from HK though... would you like to keep contact... so we can update each other on info and stuff? since we're both going for practically the same thing... hehe, I prefer making friends rather than enemies with my competitors
By the way I'm going to Singapore on Wednesday

Define "lots of financial aid to internationals". All the college sites I visited clearly says scholarship for international students are very limited.

Hi; I'm international too =)
Originally from South East Asia (Singapore), where I studied in this mad hard local school.
Now in Mainland China, in an international school.
My SAT I score was a 1500 combined (740V,760M), and I haven't taken my SAT IIs yet.
Junior schedule had 5 APs and 1 IB-HL (APs: English Language, Biology, MacroEcon, MicroEcon, Psychology; IB-HL: Mandarin)
Senior schedule will have 5 APs =p
Uh...what else..I play on the varsity basketball and softball teams, do Model United Nations and Habitat for Humanity (we built homes in Thailand) and some other stuff.
I interned at 2 companies for the past 2 summers, and I have pretty good summer programs to back me up.
I'm looking at:
Stanford ED
Northwestern
UC-Berkeley/ UCLA
NYU Sterns
U of Washington
U of Southern California
That's about it =)

Canadian Idol,
How are you taking 5 HL courses? I thought IB only allowed a max of 4.
I know people who took 6 HL courses, but they couldn't get the IB diploma... I didn't really ask why they didn't get it, but i'm assuming they pissed off the organization by taking more than 4... Are you sure your diploma's in the bag?
By Ashleycrombie (Ashleycrombie) on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 02:04 am: Edit
Hey Collegehell, yeah it's EA for Stanford now, but non-binding provided they admit you. I don't need financial aid, so it's not much of a problem in that sense.
By Canadian_Idol (Canadian_Idol) on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 03:40 am: Edit
I'm pretty sure it's okay - I'll ask the coordinator though to make sure.
I don't know how or why those people did not get the diploma by taking 6 HL courses. Maybe they didn't pass one of the exams. I think if you get 3 or lower in ONE course you fail the entire thing.

By Tuannguyen (Tuannguyen) on Wednesday, July 02, 2003 - 06:48 pm: Edit
Canadian Idol,
These people are REALLY smart people. I asked them what score they have and they said they had 7s and the lowest score was this girl with a 6 (her lowest and only "low" score, so i'm imgaining that she got 7s on the rest). Still good scores, both score equivalent to an AP 5 (for those who don't know what we're talking about). Anyways, yeah, i'm just saying, make sure you have the IB diploma in the bag. I should've asked them why they didn't get the diploma though.

Hey, i am from Nepal. I just want to know if this formula is going to work:
SAT1: (740V, 690M)
SAT2: havent taken yet
TOEFL:283
top 10% ranking
National Distinction Award(Academics, class 10)
LOTS OF ECs AND VOLUNTEER JOBS
*** Since class 4, i ahve taken part in numerous interschol, regoinal, and national level extempore and debate compititions and have secured 1st position in ALL of them.***
is it good enough for MIT, CALTECH, PRINCETON etc etc or some other ives?? cannot afford more than $6000.
somebody please reply.. everybody seems busy posting questions only!!
By Collegehell (Collegehell) on Friday, July 04, 2003 - 04:33 pm: Edit
Lostgirl : I am no expert here but its harder for us internationals I would say if u get 780+ SAT 2's ud have apretty decent shot specially with national honour but from what i have heard you can get left out just for the sake of diversity ( someone from nepal with better grades maybe)
DEFINATELY a chance but just to be on the safe side look for a safety school

most of u guys' stats are so good!!! i mean, wtf!
i'm an student from japan and i only got M:750 V:400 TOEFL:253 but i managed to get into brown, johns hopkins and the University of pennsylvania.
i had a couple of extracurriculars but i didn't have any awards. i didn't list any volunteer/ work experiences.i am not a legacy.
however, I had EXCELLENT grades in the most rigorous course available and ranked in the top 1%. i got good recs from teachers.
my guess is, u guys are over-estimating the SATs.
yes, the admissions people will look at your scores, but it is much more important to do well in your school work.
btw, i'm not going to attend any of the colleges in the us. i am going to attend the university of tokyo (japan).

thanks collegehell and Heartfang. now i can see a little where i stand.

please do advise me some safety colleges. i want to go for Computer engineering. so how wise it would be to apply to liberal arts college?
pls respond, thanks in advance.

Idonotcare, yup,GRE IS for graduate schools, but most undergraduate schools say u may take it in place of SATs if they r not available in where u live.
Lostgirl.SAT is not everything,so don't care too much about it.Personally,I think urs is OK.Anyway,it's still up to u
Wish you good luck.

Hey everyone I am wondering whether or not I would be an eligible candidate forsome of these university although im gonna be on the 10th grade next year
my name is Varenka Rdz, I was born in Mexico and currently living in Mexico still but I have lived in about 4 places in Mexico and also in Canada so my english is pretty good.
I have a gpa of 3.8 , in class rank I知 2nd out of 50 students,
No Ap classes available in my school.
I speak Spanish as my first language English as my second , and I speak French and German fluently
some of my extra curricular activities ive been working on are:

*social participation such as: ECYD, Angle for a day
*President of ANCLA( association of abstinence to smoking drinking and drugs) and conferences at my community
*Red Cross , courses and volunteer work
*soccer , basket ball player at school for 7 years now
* tennis player for 10 years and regional winner for 2 years.
*Tutoring
*helped around on the school staff once a week.
*group of the international show case (investigation of cultures and languages)
* I shadowed a dentist last summer helped around
*I have seen some operations and oral surgeries.
I know these ain稚 impressive but I知 really working hard to find something else to add to the list
I know i also need real good sat scores , which I will try my hardest to obtain.
IM also thinking of applying to these other Univ.: and look for some who have the pre-dentistry mayor
but heres some that i have on mind:
Howard Univ (probably not since i heard its an all black college)
Marquette Univ
Columbia univ
Rochester univ
Univ. of Michigan
Boston Univ.
Tufts Univ.
Michigan Univ
Columbia Univ
and I知 still looking for other but I知 still keeping my options open
so I just want to as you guys for some advice am i doing alright?????
do you all think I can really get into one of those Univ.?
what else can I do?
I know its too soon to think about college but hey when you plan your life you are most likely to succeed.
oh um the high school I知 attending right now is a roman catholic all girl private highschool , and I知 not going to ask for financial aid I think that makes things easier

wish u good luck;)

Ivyrules, did you apply for financial aid? Sorry, but why did you choose u of tokyo over the others?
By Ivyrules (Ivyrules) on Monday, July 07, 2003 - 10:03 am: Edit
heartfang: yes, i did apply for financial aid but i didn't get anything. And that's why i'm not going to the us universities.... i mean who can afford those schools with no financial aid!!!!
btw, i don't think that applying to schools requesting finaid would heart your chances for getting accepted (i don't know for sure though...)the difficult part is to actually get aid!
anyway, i wish you good luck

hey all,
i'm singaporean as well. going to umich this fall.
here's my stats:
SAT: 800m/700v, didn't take SAT II cause i was busy with other stuff. I only applied to Umich in fact, but i was pretty sure i would get in. i wonder if i had been more ambitious, what would have happened.
for those taking brit O and A levels: know it's your O levels which count more, A levels are for advanced credits:
for me: O levels: 6 As, 3Bs; A levels: ABBC, but got a A1 for my GP: that helped i believe...
as for ECs: i was national youth for a sport, was in a few committees, average community service and a few other things...
recs: not bad i guess, could be better if i was a better student...
anyway, just something you guys can work with

By Anorchard (Anorchard) on Wednesday, July 09, 2003 - 04:41 pm: Edit
yes of course that's true, but you still do have to have a decent amount of ECs as well, unless you're absolutely brilliant, like the next asimov or something.
researching: you do have competitive stats for your SATs and your grades, but like i said above, you've got to have some ECs at least, to show that you're not just mugging for exams but you are a well-rounded individual.
