I consider myself a semi-goth. I dress like it, too. I'm not one of those goths who are incapable of talking about anything but death and satan, and most of my friends aren't goths.

Looking at the Smith website, and reading people's opinions about it in various places, I got the feeling that people like me will be in the extreme minority in the 5-colleges area and may not fit in at Smith. Please prove me wrong (Smith seems perfect on everything except this, and it's driving me crazy).

Thanks.

I would imagine that you can probably find a little bit of just about everything in the Amherst/Northampton 5-college area.

" I consider myself a semi-goth. I dress like it, too."

Be sure to get some photographs taken. You'll be quite amused in about ten years!

How you dress now should be way down on your list of things to consider when choosing a college.

Smith College is... simply great. If your're even thinking about missing out on such an incredible experience just because of the way you dress, maybe it's time to check out the GAP. (Just kidding... maybe)

A friend's daughter is at Smith. The friend told me, "She feels so at home there. There are so many other students just like her -- they wear black, have all sorts of piercings. It's great." Sounds as though you would be right at home. Why not visit and see?

Smith seemed to be quite eclectic, with a bit of everything.

I think AP is right: why not visit and see?

Thanks. I've been getting so many conflicting messages about the type of people who go to Smith (someone told me that they're all white, preppy, rich, and snobbish; others told me that it's full of leather-wearing lesbians; etc.) I really like the school, and I may not have a chance to visit, and I know I would be miserable in a school full of preppy people (it'll be just like highschool), so I'm checking. Thanks. :)

Smith is definitely not full of preppy people.
I haven't visited but a few friends of my daughters attend and they wouldn't look for a homogeneous group in college, anymore than it sounds like that you would.
However, I would take that advice to have picture of your self for later perusal.
My daughter has a friend at Reed, who was a card carrying Goth in his freshman year, but now that he has committed to his philosophy major as a junior has changed to wearing suits inc tie !

We visited Smith for a day and a half and it is decidedly NOT preppy. And it's not overrun with leather-wearing lesbians either.

Duplicate post. Sorry.

""And it's not overrun with leather-wearing lesbians either."

Aw, shucks!

How is the relationship between Amherst and Smith?

By Thedad (Thedad) on Saturday, June 07, 2003 - 09:11 pm: Edit

Both are members of the Five College Consortium, along with Mount Holyoke, Hampshire, and UMass Amherst.

At Smith, you can cross-register for classes at any of the other campuses after your first semester at Smith. A free shuttle service runs between the schools.
