i read that the new us news rankings are out and princeton & amherst are the #1. anyone seen the magazine in a store yet.

I saw it at Barnes and Noble in Washington DC. Your source is right about the #1s. Swarthmore was the #2 LAC, don't remember the rest, although Haverford was a bit lower than last year. Top 10 national unis, based on memory:
1. Princeton
2. Harvard and Yale
4. Caltech, MIT, Penn, Stanford, Duke
9. Dartmouth
10. Columbia and Northwestern.

Hello everyone,

I am doing dissertation work on the impact of newsmagazine rankings. If you are students and you are reading this, would you share your stories about your experiences with newsmagazine rankings.

Whenever, I mention my dissertation I get lots of anecdotal stories suggesting heavy reliance on the list as a starting point in some families.

If you or someone you know is or has relied on any magazine ranking to shape your college decision, please drop me a line.

I am particularly interested in the point or stage in the process people first turn to magazine rankings.

An example of a conversation: A student attending one of the top universities in the country said he chose the school after having been rejected by institutions ranked higher, because it was ranked the highest of those that were left.
