Could someone tell me more about the residential college system at Rice? I know it is modeled on Yale's. How active is the system? How important are residential colleges to the students - how much do they contribute to the community?

Actually, it is modeled after Oxford's. To the Rice students and grads I have met, the residential colleges were very important. They replace the Greek system as a center for social activity but add an academic component that does not exist in typical Frats and Sororities. Assignment to a college is random, eliminating all exclusivity. From what I am told, the residental system at Rice, like that at Yale, is central to undergraduate education.
