My daughter wants to major in Studio Art and Photography. She wants a traditional college setting, not an art school. We are looking at James Madison University, Syracuse, and Alfred. Does anyone have any other suggestions for an East Coast area school - nothing over 15,000 students? We live in Northern Virginia and 6-7 hours away is our limit. We also visited RIT, and although we feel it is a fabulous program, the atmosphere and the campus are not a good fit for my daughter. We loved Alfred. I haven't seen any remarks about Alfred. Any comments or suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks a lot.

How about Ithaca College? The school of Humanities and Sciences seems to have diverse offerings, including studio art.

We saw Alfred as we travel a lot to New York and friends of ours in NY had a daughter that went there. She is now a professor at another New York College and does sell her art work..she lives in the Adirondack Moutans in the summer ,,she is an artsy type person, likes tranquility and all that. It is somewhat isolated but it is a nice campus and the professors are supposed to be great. There is another college right there as well so it is not really lonely. I love it in New York myself so I think it depends on your daughter..my son has been around a lot of kids from all diferent states he says he would love to go to school with kids from the state of New York. I think a fair amount of the kids there are from New York something like 2/3.
The schools that I know of that are strong on art and within 6 or 7 hours of you are Skidmore,Hollins University,Suny-Purchase,NYU,U of Penn,Bard , Furman. I believe Loyola in Baltimore now has some sort of program where you can take art classes at the Maryland Institute College of Art..I am not sure on how it works though. My
We are from Maryland.

Check out Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. It is in the top 20 in Art, in an urban setting with low in-state tuition.

R.I.T is generally consider the one the best schools for this area. This program funded out the woszoo!!!(and I dont use that term very offten, not since the 30's) Being up kodak, nikon and corningware country they see tons of money from these corps. to put there money into photography.....if you can stand the cold, it really isnt that empty up there, tons of towns surround the campus...
