Hello,
I would like to start homeschooling my daughter, who is about to start her freshman year in high school. If possible, will you be able to tell me where I can get books according to her grade. And when she finishes the next year, where can I get books according to that grade. Thank you.
Just for the record, we live in Wantagh, New York. (if that information is needed).

There's an excellent thread on this very topic, Starlite. Click on the Homeschooling folder on the Main Topics menu and then click on the Cost of Homeschooling thread. Also, if you have any other specific homeschooling questions, you can always address them here to Nathan, our guest homeschooling-section moderator, who is about to graduate and go on to college. Thanks for visiting College Confidential. Make yourself right at home.

Thank you Dave for being kind enough to reply. I have read those threads, but how do find where to get these books? Is there some sort of link? Phone number? Thank you.

Hey Valentina - did you track down the books? I'm curious - why are you thinking about home schooling at the high school level? That's when a lot of families start getting back into the school system, both for extracurricular opportunities, and the difficulty of teaching advanced classes (e.g., calculus, AP English).

A book I highly recommend for students looking for an alternative to traditional high school is "The Teenage Liberation Handbook" by Grace Llewellyn. "Homeschooling" is an unfortunate term, because it summons up images of mom teaching the kid at the kitchen table, from her own base of knowledge. It doesn't have to be like that at any age, and is rarely like that for teens. The homeschooled teens I know take a great deal of responsibility for hand-crafting an education to fit their needs. This might include community college classes, distance learning courses, homeschooler only classes, self-study leading to an AP exam, college dual enrollment, internships, tutors. (my son is taking a homeschooler chemistry class this year taught by a homeschooling parent who is a professional chemist. He's done a slew of AP exams in subjects I know nothing about). The possibilities are endless!

I am trying to convince my father that i should behomeschooled. My mom already likes the idea but my dad is sticking to his preset ideas. I cant stand highschool! Im in the middle of my freshman year now and i just have to get out. Its horrible. My dad used to just say no but now he says he will consider it if i can find scholarships. He wants to know if i can get a scholarship if im homeschooled.

Taryn,
My son has always been homeschooled and is a senior this year. He has been awarded several scholarships. The best come from being named a National Merit Finalist, based on PSAT taken as a junior. He was awarded $1000 per year from a homeschooling curriculum company that we have used. He has also applied for Boy Scout scholarships. He was accepted to all four colleges he applied to. He received full-ride offer to the University of Tulsa(NMF), $12,000 per year at Southwestern University (TX), $13,000 per year at Trinity (TX). There are numerous outside scholarships out there that have nothing to do with where you went to high school, but based on essays, test scores, interests, etc. Hope this helps.
