Question: I receive SSI (Supplementary Security Income). If I get scholarships or loans for college, will that affect my SSI?
Your college grants and loans should not affect your SSI, but when you apply for need-based financial aid, your SSI will be counted as income. However, SSI is typically low enough that it doesn’t make a student ineligible for need-based aid.
Will your SSI continue after age 18? If not, be sure to alert the financial aid office at the college you will attend (or at all schools to which you’re applying, if you’re about to turn 18 and lose SSI) so that it won’t be counted as an ongoing source of income.
