Rugg's Recommendations on the Colleges

Created by former guidance counselor Frederick E. Rugg. Find more information about Rugg's Recommendations.

Pros or Cons (depending on how you see it): Purists may protest seeing Rugg's included here because colleges are not ranked per se. Instead, Rugg provides lists of schools known (at least by him) to be strongest in each of myriad majors, similar to the Gourman approach. Rugg himself insists that the results aren't perfect. And he's right. But they do provide a decent starting point, especially for students who know what they want to study in college. The fact that disparate institutions show up on the same rosters (e.g., some highly selective and some barely) isn't necessarily a bad thing. It can help open eyes to little-known or under-rated schools. Again, don't expect to get a freebie online. You'll need to buy this book or find it in a high school guidance office or library.
